For multiplication facts, aim for pattern recognition before pure memorisation. The twos, fives and tens offer accessible starting points. From there, children can use known facts to work out unfamiliar ones. If they know 4 × 6 is 24, they can see that 8 × 6 is double 24, or 48. This is thinking, not guessing.
