The Soroban: A Japanese Abacus Story


The soroban is a traditional Japanese abacus that has been used for centuries. It is believed to have been developed in the 16th century and has since become an integral part of Japanese culture. Yes, diversity can be found in even the humble abacus.


The first abacus was invented by the Chinese and then spread throughout Asia, where it was adapted to different cultures. The Japanese version of the abacus was called the soroban and it was first used in Japan during the Edo period (1603–1867).


The soroban is composed of rods and beads that can be manipulated to quickly and accurately calculate and solve mathematical problems. It is still widely used in Japan today, not only to teach mathematics but also to help with mental arithmetic. Structures of Soroban

The components of the Soroban include a rectangular frame and a number of beads.


It consists of two parts: the upper deck and the lower deck. The upper deck has 1 bead on each rod, while the lower deck has 4 beads on each rod. The upper beads represent the number five, while the lower beads represent the number one. To calculate, the user moves the beads up and down the rods to represent the desired numbers.
